1. Lubricate the stud threads and bottom of each nut
  2. Install the nuts and tighten hand tight
  3. Follow the manufacturer's recommended torque sequence


The proper sequence for tightening the head bolts on an engine is to:
  1. Torque to a maximum of 30% of the final torque value
  2. Torque to a maximum of 60% of the final torque value
  3. Torque to the final torque value (100%) 
It's important to follow the correct tightening sequence because tightening adjacent bolts while
leaving the opposite bolts loose can cause uneven compression and damage to the gasket.
